Senior fitness participation rises as experts highlight recovery importance
Data from the fitness management platform Tecnofit indicates a growing trend of individuals aged 60 and older participating in gym activities. In 2025, this demographic represented approximately 7% of the analyzed student base, following a previous survey that showed a 57.31% increase in gym attendance among those over 65.
Experts note that strength training remains effective even for seniors. Hirlon Braga, a physical education professor at Estácio, explains that individuals aged 60, and even those as old as 75, can still achieve gains in muscle mass and strength, though results depend on genetics, diet, and lifestyle. This training is crucial for combating sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass and strength associated with aging.
Regarding post-workout care, specialists advise against certain habits that can hinder recovery. To avoid injury and fatigue, it is recommended to perform proper stretching, maintain hydration, and consume adequate nutrients such as carbohydrates and proteins. Avoiding sudden inactivity after intense exercise is also advised to prevent dizziness.
