Senior living industry shifts toward wellness-based models

The senior living industry is undergoing a strategic shift from traditional care-and-custodial models toward proactive, wellness-based approaches. Experts suggest that to remain competitive, the sector must move away from managing decline and instead focus on helping residents live better for longer.

Colin Milner, CEO of the International Council on Active Aging, emphasizes that senior living communities are uniquely positioned to serve as delivery systems for longevity. This requires a transition from being care-based with wellness as an add-on to being wellness-based with care available as a necessary support.

To support this evolution, there is an increasing emphasis on specialized leadership through the study of gerontology. Understanding the biological, psychological, and sociological complexities of aging allows executives to design personalized programming. With 73 percent of incoming residents demanding preference-driven care, expertise in the science of aging is becoming a critical factor in maintaining resident autonomy and engagement.
