Senior pet care: Managing health and mobility in aging animals

Caring for aging pets requires monitoring subtle changes in behavior, mobility, and physical habits. Common signs of discomfort or underlying health issues in senior dogs and cats include stiffness when using stairs, hesitation to jump, changes in appetite, increased thirst, unexplained weight loss, or restlessness at night.

Veterinary experts recommend more frequent wellness visits for older animals, often every six months, to screen for conditions such as arthritis, kidney disease, diabetes, and dental issues through bloodwork and urine testing. Early detection through routine exams can help manage these conditions before they become severe.

Home modifications can also support senior pet comfort. Suggestions include using non-slip rugs on smooth floors, providing supportive bedding, and using ramps or pet stairs to assist with mobility. Ensuring food and water are easily accessible and adjusting exercise intensity to include shorter, gentler sessions can further assist in maintaining a senior pet's quality of life.
