Senior tourism demand rises as aging populations shift travel preferences

The tourism sector is facing a shift in consumer behavior as the senior traveler profile evolves. Modern older travelers, aged 70 to 80, are moving away from rigid, large-group organized programs in favor of more flexible, high-quality experiences. This new demographic prioritizes leisure, such as unhurried meals and cultural immersion, over seeing a high volume of sights in a short timeframe.

In Spain, this demographic shift is creating significant pressure on subsidized travel services. While the number of people eligible for Imserso travel is rising due to an aging population—with the number of people aged 65 or older projected to grow significantly—the availability of travel spots is actually decreasing. Data shows that while demand from accredited individuals has risen toward 4.6 million for the 2026/27 season, the number of offered spots has dropped from a peak of 938,000 in 2018/19 to approximately 879,213 for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 seasons.
