Senior‑focused events in Uruguay and Argentina promote inclusion and patriotism

In Las Piedras, Canelones (Uruguay), a community gathering of about 150 older adults marked the World Day for the Prevention of Elder Abuse on 20 June 2026. The event launched a departmental campaign against ageism slated for 2030, under the slogan “Canelones says yes to seniors, no to ageism.” Organisers highlighted respect, listening and rights for older people, and the program featured a theatrical piece, a dance showcase by the Down Association, and a musical performance by Carlos Acosta.

Separately, the Argentine provincial government’s Subsecretaría de Personas Mayores coordinated “La Bandera nos Une” activities in Río Grande and Tolhuin, Tierra del Fuego. Hundreds of seniors, families and officials took part in symbolic flag walks, carried the national flag, and performed artistic numbers, reinforcing community identity and acknowledging the active role of older citizens in local life.
