Seniors advised to walk 20‑30 minutes daily for health benefits

Personal trainer Rafael Hidalgo recommends that people over 70 walk for 20–30 minutes, five days a week, to gain cardiovascular, mobility and overall wellbeing benefits. He adds that the duration can be increased to 40–60 minutes as fitness improves, and that regularity (four to six days weekly) matters more than intensity. Hidalgo notes that reaching the popular 10,000‑step target is unnecessary; many seniors see health gains with 6,000–8,000 steps per day.

Fitness coach Ant Finch outlines ten mobility tests that can help adults assess and maintain functional movement. The tests include touching the toes with straight legs, holding a deep squat for 60 seconds, standing up from the floor unaided, raising arms overhead while keeping the back against a wall, performing a 90/90 hip stretch, rotating the torso 45 degrees each side, lunging forward with arms raised, and drawing ankle circles while balancing on one leg. Completing these movements each week highlights areas needing work and supports strength, flexibility and pain‑free mobility.

Together, the walking guidance and mobility assessments provide a practical framework for older adults to stay active, preserve independence and reduce injury risk.
