Seniors in Australia and Singapore redefine retirement through flexible work

Seniors in Australia and Singapore are increasingly redefining retirement, moving away from a fixed exit from the workforce toward a more flexible transition involving part-time work, volunteering, and hobbies.

In Australia, many older citizens are opting for gradual reductions in work hours or casual arrangements. This shift is driven by a combination of financial needs, the desire for social connection, and the pursuit of mental and physical stimulation. This approach allows seniors to maintain stability while balancing personal interests like travel, family, and community involvement.

In Singapore, more than three in five seniors continue working past traditional retirement ages. A survey by the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) found that 46% of respondents wish to work past age 70, a figure that rises significantly among those aged 64 and older. Drivers for this trend include personal fulfillment and financial necessity, such as supporting family members with disabilities. Consequently, Singapore has implemented statutory increases to the retirement and re-employment ages, with employment rates for those aged 65 and above rising from 24.7% in 2015 to 31.5% in 2025.
