Seniors targeted by online scams exploiting urgency and trust

Seniors are among the most frequent victims of internet fraud. Scammers use fake banking or service sites to capture passwords, deceptive e‑commerce offers that never deliver goods, emotional ploys on social media, and phone calls with counterfeit voices. The most effective weapon is the creation of haste and the perception of a great bargain, prompting quick, unthoughtful actions.

Experts from security firm ESET and media outlet iDNES advise immediate steps after an attack: change compromised passwords and enable two‑factor authentication, contact banks to block or replace cards, report fraudulent merchants to the bank, cease communication with suspicious profiles and block them, and inform others of the scam. Long‑term prevention includes using unique strong passwords for each service, avoiding unknown links and emails, verifying merchants before purchase, and staying cautious of offers that seem unusually favorable.

Adopting these measures can limit financial loss and protect personal data for senior internet users.
