Seniors' Walking Advice and Heart Failure Warning
Adults over 70 are encouraged to adopt a daily walking routine of 20 to 30 minutes, building up gradually from short sessions, splitting walks between morning and afternoon, and walking at a pace that raises breathing but still allows conversation. Tips include starting with five‑minute outings, increasing time by a few minutes each week, walking with a companion, and complementing walks with strength and balance exercises to support joint health and circulation.
Cardiologist Beatriz Zamuner warns that persistent fatigue, shortness of breath, leg swelling, rapid weight gain or difficulty breathing even during light activities can signal the onset of heart failure, a condition that affects millions in Brazil and can occur at any age. She stresses that unlike ordinary tiredness, the fatigue of heart failure does not improve with rest. Early diagnosis through echocardiogram, ECG, chest X‑ray and blood tests such as BNP is essential, and modern treatments have improved outcomes.
