Senj Mayor criticizes local water supply reliability
Željko Tomljanović, the Mayor of Senj, stated during a forum in Otočac that he has not consumed water from the city's municipal supply for 30 years. He clarified that his decision was not due to the presence of PFAS or other contaminants, but because the city has traditionally relied on surface water from the Lika River.
Tomljanović noted that surface water is susceptible to contamination from sewage. While he stated that the current situation does not personally affect him, he emphasized the urgent need for Senj to secure a sustainable, long-term water supply solution. He addressed potential interventions regarding the southern branch of the water supply system and discussed alternative options.
Regarding seawater desalination, the Mayor dismissed the possibility, labeling it financially unfeasible and too expensive for the local municipal budget. These remarks were made during a discussion concerning the revitalization and restoration of the Gacka River.
