Senne Lammens faces scrutiny over Manchester United goalkeeper status

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has expressed doubts regarding the long-term suitability of goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Speaking on ‘The Good, The Bad & The Football’ podcast, Scholes suggested that the club may struggle to win the Premier League without a ‘top-class’ goalkeeper, noting that championship-winning sides like Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal typically feature elite shot-stoppers.

Lammens, a 24-year-old Belgian international, joined Manchester United from Royal Antwerp in the summer of 2025 for £18.1 million. He established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper following the departure of previous options. While Lammens was named the Premier League ‘Transfer of the Season’ for the 2025/2026 campaign, recent form has drawn scrutiny. In the opening four matches of the current season, he has conceded seven goals, including two goals in each match against newly-promoted sides Ipswich Town and Hull City.

In his 38 appearances for the club this season, Lammens has conceded 48 goals and recorded nine clean sheets. Scholes remarked that while the team must build from the defense, the uncertainty surrounding Lammens’ ability to reach a world-class level remains a concern for the club’s title ambitions.
