SenseTime introduces Tokens per Watt metric for AI efficiency
SenseTime is introducing a new metric, Tokens per Watt (TPW), to measure the efficiency of AI data centers. Unlike the traditional Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) metric, which focuses on minimizing energy loss during cooling and distribution, TPW measures the actual computational output—specifically the number of tokens generated—relative to the power consumed.
According to the company, its SenseCore platform currently holds nearly half of the Chinese neocloud market, according to Frost & Sullivan. SenseTime reported that its SenseCore facility in Lingang has increased its token yield per unit of electricity cost by 80 percent. The shift in measurement reflects a growing industry focus on maximizing usable AI output per kilowatt-hour rather than simply reducing infrastructure overhead.
