Sentencing issued in multiple sexual assault cases across Latin America
Judicial authorities in Argentina, Ecuador, and Peru have issued prison sentences following investigations into sexual assault cases involving minors and adults.
In Gálvez, Argentina, a 42-year-old man was sentenced to 12 years in prison by Judge Pablo Busaniche for the aggravated sexual abuse of a young girl within his family circle. The crimes occurred in 2023 while the defendant was tasked with caring for the victim. The prosecution had requested a 15-year sentence.
In Tulcán, Ecuador, a criminal tribunal sentenced Pedro Alexander C. I. to 19 years in prison for the rape of a 56-year-old woman. The incident took place in the Unión y Progreso neighborhood. While the prosecution presented medical and psychological evidence, the court applied the minimum sentence as it did not find sufficient evidence of specific threats or intimidation required for a higher penalty.
In the Lambayeque region of Peru, a court sentenced a stepfather, Alfredo M. M., to 20 years in prison for the sexual violation of a teenager. The victim's mother, Zoila Medaly S. P., received a 14-year sentence for improper omission regarding the crime. The abuses occurred between 2019 and the preceding years in Olmos. The court also ordered a civil reparation payment of 5,000 soles.
