Sentinel-3C satellite releases first Earth observation images

The European Space Agency’s Sentinel-3C Earth observation satellite has begun transmitting its first images and data only two weeks after its launch. As the third spacecraft in the Sentinel-3 series, the satellite is designed to ensure continuity in environmental data collection for the Copernicus mission.

Early observations from the satellite’s optical and radar instruments have provided detailed imagery of various regions, including the Po Valley in Italy, the Canadian Arctic, and the Bahamas. The mission is tasked with monitoring the state of the Earth’s oceans, land surfaces, cryosphere, and atmosphere. Specifically, the satellite will measure sea surface temperature, color, and height, as well as monitor floods, droughts, fires, and vegetation health.

Mission controllers are currently entering a five-month commissioning phase. The Sentinel-3C operates in a polar, sun-synchronous orbit at an average altitude of 814.5 km and is designed for a seven-year lifetime.
