Ghana President Mahama announces regional development and investment plans
President John Dramani Mahama has outlined several key initiatives aimed at driving economic growth and infrastructure development in Ghana. During engagements with the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, the President emphasized the need to fast-track development in the country’s six newly created regions—Ahafo, Bono East, North East, Oti, Savannah, and Western North—to address existing infrastructure gaps.
To stimulate local economies, the government plans to establish 24-hour markets in all 261 districts and aims to mobilize approximately US$2 billion annually through private sector partnerships. These investments will target nine strategic sectors, with a particular focus on agriculture, such as oil palm and poultry production, to reduce import dependency.
Additionally, President Mahama officially commenced the construction of the $1.3 billion Sentuo Airport Garden City project in Accra. This mixed-use development is expected to create over 3,000 jobs and includes premium apartments, a hotel, a conference center, and healthcare facilities. The President called for closer collaboration between traditional authorities and district-level government officials to ensure public resources translate into tangible local improvements.
