Seogwipo City wins award for waste banner upcycling proposal

Seogwipo City has been selected as an outstanding team in the 2nd Community Problem-Solving Idea Solvathon, hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. The city's proposal focuses on establishing an integrated upcycling system for waste banners.

In Seogwipo, approximately 17 tons of waste banners were discarded last year, with over 59% being incinerated. The winning proposal suggests a model where banners are collected and sorted locally, then linked with corporate recycling technologies—such as chemical recycling—to transform them into resources rather than simple waste.

Collaborating with companies including Daehan Media, Moa, and Upclose, Seogwipo was named an outstanding team in the SK Chemicals-linked category and received the Chairman's Award from the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The city plans to explore business feasibility and further collaboration with private enterprises to create a stable resource circulation system.
