Señor de los Milagros processions begin in Peru
The religious celebrations for the ‘Mes Morado’ (Purple Month) have commenced in Peru, centered around the devotion to the ‘Señor de los Milagros’. In Puno, the first procession began near the San Antonio Church, gathering dozens of faithful accompanied by traditional music and incense burners (sahumadoras). Religious leaders used the event to call for deeper spiritual practice and urged media outlets to promote ethical and Christian values.
Historically, the ‘Señor de los Milagros’ is one of the world’s largest religious processions, held every October. The image is believed to have been painted in the 17th century in Pachacamilla by an Angolan slave without formal artistic training. To protect the original painting following the 1687 earthquake, an oil replica was created for public processions. The brotherhood associated with the image is structured within the Nazarenas in Lima.
