Seoul commemorates 100th anniversary of Hangeul Braille
Seoul is hosting various commemorative events to mark the 100th anniversary of the promulgation of Hangeul Braille, also known as Hunmaengjeongeum. Created by Park Du-seong in 1926 to enable visually impaired individuals to read and write, the system is a significant cultural heritage.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government will hold a three-day event from November 4 to November 6 at the Seoul Gallery and Seoul Library. Activities include exhibitions of Braille books and materials, workshops for making Braille business cards, and barrier-free film screenings where non-disabled participants can experience viewing through audio descriptions alone.
Additionally, the Mapo-gu district is organizing a Braille escape room at the Mapo Braille Library on November 4. This interactive program allows residents to learn the principles of Braille through puzzle-solving and clue-finding. The celebrations aim to increase public awareness of the value of Braille and improve understanding of the information access environment for the visually impaired.
