South Korean officials inspect heat‑wave shelters amid extreme alerts
On August 5 a heat‑wave extreme temperature alert (중대경보) was issued across Seoul and surrounding areas. Local officials in three jurisdictions carried out on‑site inspections of heat‑wave shelters and related facilities.
Paju Mayor Son Baechan visited a cooling shelter, a construction‑site rest area, and a free‑water “Han‑mokeum” shelter, checking air‑conditioning operation, temperature, hygiene, and confirming that workers showing heat‑illness symptoms were removed from work and given care.
Yongsan District Chief Kim Kyung‑dae convened an emergency meeting, expanded the number of heat shelters to 128, added 24‑hour emergency shelters, and inspected shelters, shower facilities, and ice‑making equipment, while personally checking conditions at a shelter and a senior center. He reported outreach to 1,635 isolated seniors and disabled residents and distribution of water.
Gangseo District Chief Jin Kyo‑hoon inspected the Ujangsan senior‑center shelter, verified cooling equipment, and met with elders, ordering prompt repairs and upgrades. The district operates 195 heat shelters, 163 dedicated to seniors, and uses IoT to monitor health status.
All three administrations said they will continue real‑time monitoring, extend shelter hours, and prioritize protection of vulnerable groups during the heat wave.
