Seoul Mayor Oh Se‑hoon faces election‑law complaint over alleged false statements

South Korea’s Democratic Party special committee on false information filed a criminal complaint on July 27 accusing Seoul Mayor Oh Se‑hoon of violating the Public Official Election Act by publishing false statements related to the “Myeongtae‑kyun opinion‑poll funding” controversy.

The committee said the false statements influenced the narrow 62,259‑vote margin in the recent mayoral race. A court earlier imposed a 10 million‑won fine and a 21 million‑won confiscation for political‑fund law violations; a fine exceeding 1 million won could trigger loss of the mayor’s office and a by‑election. The committee also called for the forced seizure and full return of all campaign‑fund refunds to citizens.
