Seoul National University Hospital identifies new indicator for cardiomyopathy sudden death risk

A research team from Seoul National University Hospital has identified a new indicator to more accurately predict sudden death in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. By analyzing 1,761 patients from Seoul National University Hospital and Samsung Medical Center over a median of 6.8 years, researchers found that Left Atrial Reservoir Strain (LARS) is a critical predictor.

Specifically, patients with a LARS value below 21% face a six-fold higher risk of sudden death events compared to those with a value of 21% or higher, even among those previously categorized as low-to-intermediate risk by the standard European Society of Cardiology risk score (HCM Risk-SCD).

Integrating the LARS metric into existing evaluation models improved the accuracy of identifying high-risk patients, increasing the Area Under the Curve (AUC) from 0.63 to 0.73. Because LARS can be measured using standard echocardiography with specialized software, it offers a practical way to refine preventative treatments, such as the use of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD), in clinical settings. The findings were published in the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography.
