Seoul National University Hospital professors release guide on chronic urticaria

Professors Lee Dong-hoon of Dermatology and Kang Hye-ryeon of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at Seoul National University Hospital have released a new health guide titled ‘Don’t Just Endure Urticaria’. The book aims to educate patients on chronic urticaria, which is clinically defined as symptoms that persist or recur for more than six weeks.

The publication addresses common misconceptions that suggest hives are a condition to be endured, noting that such attitudes can delay necessary medical intervention. The book covers the biological mechanisms of hives, such as the role of mast cells and histamine, and distinguishes between spontaneous and induced types, including dermatographism, cold urticaria, and cholinergic urticaria.

Reflecting the latest international clinical guidelines, the guide outlines a stepped treatment approach. This includes the use of second-generation H1 antihistamines, potential dosage adjustments, and advanced targeted therapies like omalizumab. It also touches upon upcoming treatments expected in future guidelines, such as dupilumab and BTK inhibitors.
