Seoul National University Hospital to lead Korean ARPA-H healthcare AI and gene therapy projects

Seoul National University Hospital has been selected to participate in four projects under the Korean ARPA-H Project, a national initiative aimed at solving complex healthcare challenges through high-risk, high-innovation research. The hospital will serve as the lead institution for two major projects and as a joint research partner for two others.

One primary project, known as CHAIN, focuses on establishing an Agentic AI ecosystem to support essential and public healthcare. Led by Professor Lee Hyung-chul, this 14.65 billion KRW initiative aims to develop the 'KoreaHealth.ai' platform. The project utilizes a 'Sovereign Medical AI' approach to ensure patient data remains secure within hospitals. The goal is to release 1,000 verified medical AI agents for free by 2030.

A second lead project, headed by Professor Kim Jung-hoon, targets the development of a precision gene therapy platform for hereditary retinal diseases common in Koreans. This research, supported by up to 8 billion KRW, will utilize long-read whole-genome sequencing to create precise treatment maps and validate gene-editing technologies.

Additionally, the hospital will collaborate on projects involving gene-editing therapies for rare genetic diseases and the establishment of regional cancer management networks to improve healthcare accessibility and risk stratification.
