Seoul opens K-Culture Station in repurposed underground tunnel

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has officially opened the ‘K-Culture Station,’ a 335-meter-long underground venue located beneath Seoul Plaza. The space, measuring approximately 3,261 square meters, had remained unused for over 40 years. It was originally created in the early 1980s to connect City Hall Station and Euljiro 1-ga Station, which were built at different depths.

As part of a broader urban initiative to transform neglected underground areas into recreational spaces, the city has converted the concrete tunnel into a stage for light, video, and music. The inaugural event is the ‘Big Bang 20th Anniversary Media Exhibition: Cosmos,’ which utilizes media art, virtual reality, and interactive installations across 11 experiential zones.

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon stated that the city aims to uncover hidden spaces to create new attractions for both local residents and global K-culture fans. The venue will serve as a permanent cultural platform with rotating programs following the conclusion of the Big Bang exhibition.
