Daegu Disability Groups Demand Immediate Heat‑wave Safeguards

On 29 March 2024, the Daegu Disability Discrimination Elimination Alliance and the Disability Rights Advocacy Group held a press conference in front of Daegu City Hall. They urged the municipal government to adopt concrete measures to protect people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups during extreme heat.

The groups highlighted that Daegu’s heat‑wave days have risen by 16.4 days above the national average, reaching an annual mean of 33.4 days since 2015. They reported that several designated cooling shelters are inaccessible to wheelchair users; for example, a shelter in Dalseong County has a steep ramp that prevents entry. The activists called for a city‑wide survey of all cooling shelters, the creation of barrier‑free facilities, an extension of energy‑voucher support, and the provision of disaster alerts in formats suitable for people with visual, hearing, or developmental disabilities.

They warned that without such actions, the health and lives of disabled residents are at heightened risk during heat‑wave emergencies.
