Seoul police probe Jamsil ballot‑shortage protest, 139 suspects

Police in Seoul reported that investigations into the ongoing Jamsil counting‑center protest, sparked by the June 3 local‑election ballot shortage, now cover 57 cases and 139 individuals. Charges include obstruction of official duties, illegal entry into the Olympic Park handball arena, assault on officers, and spreading false information online. Two suspects faced arrest‑warrant applications for assaulting police, while a 40‑year‑old woman was detained for verbal abuse and spitting at officers.

Authorities have deployed more than 200 rapid‑response units, with up to seven teams on weekends, to maintain order. They also requested the removal of 286 online posts containing false claims such as “Chinese police are on the scene,” resulting in 148 deletions. The police said they will continue to enforce the law against illegal actions while safeguarding the right to peaceful expression.
