Seoul protester A faces court hearing over Olympic Park entry blockade

A 30‑year‑old woman identified as A was charged with obstructing officials at the Olympic Park handball arena in Seoul, where the venue was being used as a polling‑station counting site for the June 3 local elections. On 16 May she grabbed the door handle and held off entry by Korean sports‑association staff for nearly two hours while wearing a black shirt and badges showing the South Korean and U.S. flags.

On 21 July she appeared before the Seoul Eastern District Court for a pre‑trial detention hearing (영장실질심사). The judge will decide whether to order her detention while the case proceeds. At the same hearing, a 30‑year‑old man (B) accused of illegally searching a women’s handball team and three men charged with obstructing police were also examined.

Police noted that negotiations, including by the leader of the People Power Party, eventually led to a temporary agreement, but the obstruction was deemed unlawful. Authorities said they will respond strictly to illegal actions while protecting lawful protest rights.
