Seoul St. Mary's Hospital performs successful emergency heart surgery on 91-year-old

A 91-year-old patient suffering from myocardial infarction has successfully recovered following emergency surgery at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital. The successful outcome was attributed to a rapid medical transfer facilitated by an emergency hotline connecting a local hospital in the Gyeonggi region to the tertiary hospital.

Due to severe coronary artery calcification, traditional intervention was not feasible. To minimize the physical burden on the elderly patient, who also had a history of cerebral hemorrhage, Professor Kim Yong-han's surgical team performed an off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). This method allowed the surgery to be conducted while the heart was still beating, avoiding the need for a cardiopulmonary bypass machine.

During the recovery process, medical staff identified an atrioventricular (AV) block through ECG monitoring. The team performed a dual-chamber permanent pacemaker implantation to stabilize the patient's heart rhythm. Following close observation and adjustment of the pacemaker settings, the patient was discharged in good health.
