Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital tests AI and wearable data to predict chronic kidney disease
A research team led by Professor Lee In-seok of the Department of Gastroenterology at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital has begun clinical validation of a mobile application designed to predict the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The system utilizes artificial intelligence to analyze a combination of health checkup data, genomic information, and real-time data collected from wearable devices, such as activity levels, sleep patterns, and heart rates.
Unlike traditional models that rely on static clinical data, this AI-driven approach aims to provide continuous risk management and personalized lifestyle coaching. The project utilizes Federated Learning technology, allowing multiple medical institutions to train the AI model without directly sharing sensitive patient records.
The clinical validation involves 50 participants over a six-month period to evaluate the service’s utility and satisfaction. The research is part of a larger government-supported initiative to develop advanced AI technologies for life-cycle health risk prediction and management.
