Seoul Subway Line 7 extension work suspended in Cheongna
Excavation work for the Seoul Subway Line 7 extension to Cheongna International City has been temporarily suspended following measurements of ground subsidence and groundwater levels that exceeded safety management standards. The suspension occurred at the station 006 excavation site within the 6th construction section.
Incheon Metropolitan City is conducting a detailed safety investigation, including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and gravity surveys, to identify the cause. This specific section previously experienced a 22-month work stoppage due to ground subsidence before resuming last year. While initial visual inspections showed no immediate abnormalities, officials stated that work will only resume once safety is fully verified.
Local residents and the Committee for the Timely Opening of Seoul Subway Line 7 have expressed significant concern regarding potential delays. While the original target for the first phase was December 2027, recent assessments suggest the opening could be pushed to 2030, with the second phase potentially delayed until 2033. Residents argue that such delays could negatively impact the economic competitiveness, business investment, and transportation convenience of Cheongna International City.
