Mexico's SEP bans militarized schools ahead of 2026‑27 term
The Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) ordered that no private or public school may operate under the denominations “militarizada”, “militar”, “castrense” or any similar military‑styled model for the 2026‑2027 school year. The directive, signed by SEP secretary Mario Delgado Carrillo, requires all 32 state education authorities to review and revoke any Reconocimientos de Validez Oficial de Estudios (RVOE) granted to such institutions by 31 August 2026, the start of the new school year. The measure follows the death of 13‑year‑old Dafne Zapata, who drowned during a summer camp at the Marina Doenitz militarized academy in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas, on 16 July 2026. Schools identified as militarized must cease activities, hand over all academic records, and immediately reimburse families for any fees paid for enrollment, uniforms, supplies or other services not rendered. The closure applies nationwide, affecting academies such as the Ignacio Zaragoza school in Puebla, which has been ordered to shut down and re‑locate its students. President Claudia Sheinbaum publicly backed the SEP action, emphasizing that military training is reserved exclusively for the armed forces and the Guard National and is incompatible with Mexico’s New School system.
