Sepanggar Port container accident kills father and daughter
A fatal accident occurred on Jalan Sepanggar near Sepanggar Port in Kota Kinabalu, resulting in the deaths of a 53-year-old man, Mohd Jadi Pelbi, and his 24-year-old daughter, Norfaieza Mohd Jadi. The victims were traveling in a Toyota Avanza when a container fell from a Hino trailer that was parked on the roadside for unloading operations. The container lost balance and crushed the vehicle, trapping both victims inside.
Emergency responders used cranes to remove the container, and the victims' bodies were recovered by fire and rescue teams late in the evening. The 49-year-old trailer driver has been detained to assist with investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Following the incident, Karambunai State Assemblyman Datuk Dr Aliakbar Gulasan called for urgent action from Sabah Ports and the Royal Malaysia Police to address road safety. He highlighted the dangers posed by heavy vehicles and containers parked along the route from the Sepanggar Tunnel to Sabah Port, urging authorities to tighten enforcement and parking management to prevent further tragedies.
