Separate incidents involving law enforcement and fatal shootings in Florida
Two distinct incidents involving fatal shootings have occurred in Florida. In Palm Harbor, an off-duty Pasco County sheriff’s deputy, 30-year-old David Greis Ospina, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on October 24, 2026. Investigators report that Ospina and a female deputy had been involved in an altercation in a parking lot following a Halloween party. According to detectives, Ospina pointed a handgun at the female deputy inside a vehicle before turning the weapon on himself. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death.
In Port Charlotte, a man was shot and killed by Charlotte County deputies following a dispute between neighbors. Authorities stated that officers responded to a residence after a neighbor reported being threatened with a firearm. When deputies attempted to contact the suspect, he emerged from his home armed with a machete and a handgun, pointing the firearm at an officer. Two deputies returned fire, striking the man, who later died at a hospital. A neighbor of the deceased expressed concern regarding the use of lethal force, suggesting deputies should aim for non-lethal areas.
