Sepolia apartment fire destroys basement unit and hospitalizes resident

A major fire destroyed a basement apartment on Rodou Street in the Sepolia neighborhood of Athens early in the morning. The blaze broke out shortly after 06:00, prompting an immediate response from the Fire Service, which deployed four vehicles and 15 firefighters to prevent the flames from spreading to the rest of the building.

A 28-year-old resident was sleeping in the apartment when the fire started. According to a friend, the man noticed the flames and smoke at the last moment, allowing him to escape the building safely. He was transported to a hospital by EKAB paramedics for precautionary measures due to smoke inhalation.

Authorities conducted a precautionary evacuation of the entire apartment building to ensure resident safety. Following the extinguishment of the fire, emergency services remained on-site to conduct thorough checks for hidden hotspots and to ensure no one else was trapped. The Arson Crimes Investigation Unit (AKAE) has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
