In parallel, a study from the State Key Laboratory of Trauma and Chemical Poisoning at Army Medical University and West China Second University Hospital identified 4‑phenylbutyric acid (4‑PBA) as a protective agent for the septic heart. The drug modulates glycolysis‑linked protein modification and mitochondria‑associated endoplasmic‑reticulum membranes, preserving mitochondrial function, improving cardiac output, and increasing survival in animal models of sepsis.
