SEPTA unveils ‘Accelerate’ plan to modernize Philadelphia transit
SEPTA has introduced the ‘Accelerate’ plan, a modernization proposal aimed at transforming public transportation across the Philadelphia region. Moving away from previous ‘doomsday’ scenarios regarding budget shortfalls, the agency is instead presenting a vision of what long-term, stable investment could achieve for its 800,000 daily riders.
The four-pronged strategy focuses on trolley modernization, new vehicles, Regional Rail upgrades, and a new bus network. Key proposals include the acquisition of 230 new Regional Rail cars to enable 15-minute service frequencies at nearly half of the system’s stations by 2050. The plan also seeks to replace aging vehicles on the Broad Street Line and Norristown High-Speed Line, and upgrade the 40-year-old trolley fleet with more spacious, accessible models.
Despite the ambitious vision, SEPTA faces a significant $193 million operating budget gap. General Manager Scott Sauer stated that the plan is intended to demonstrate the potential of a ‘best-in-class transit system’ to lawmakers, emphasizing that the success of the initiative depends on securing reliable state funding.
