September 11 attacks anniversary highlights security and cyber resilience

The 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks serves as a focal point for reflecting on security, resilience, and the evolution of national defense. The attacks on the World Trade Center fundamentally altered the American sense of security and prompted massive civilian and first-responder rescue efforts, including a large-scale water evacuation of Manhattan.

In the aftermath of the attacks, the USA PATRIOT Act was signed into law in October 2001, amending 15 federal laws to enhance surveillance capabilities and paving the way for the creation of the Department of Homeland Security.

Modern security discussions have shifted from purely physical threats to the necessity of cyber resilience. While prevention remains a priority, the increasing dependence of critical sectors—such as banking, aviation, and healthcare—on digital networks highlights the need for organizations to withstand and recover from malicious digital disruptions and attacks on critical infrastructure.
