September 11 attacks: 25th anniversary marked by global commemorations FAST-MOVING

The world marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, which killed 2,977 people. Commemorations are taking place across the United States, including at Ground Zero in New York, the Pentagon in Virginia, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. In New York, a drone display titled ‘2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor’ used 2,977 drones to recreate the silhouettes of the Twin Towers.

Ceremonies in Manhattan include the reading of victims' names and a moment of silence for first responders and those who later died from illnesses related to toxic dust. The FDNY is also honoring the 343 firefighters lost on that day, as well as 453 members who died later from respiratory diseases and cancers.

International responses include the United Nations honoring the victims and the NATO Secretary General reaffirming alliance unity. In Canada, the anniversary highlights the legacy of Operation Yellow Ribbon, which diverted hundreds of flights to Canadian airports. Additionally, the U.S. National Park Service has allocated $4 million for the maintenance of the 9/11 memorials in New York and at the Pentagon.
