September 11 survivors face rising cancer rates and long-term illnesses
Nearly 25 years after the September 11 attacks, the health consequences for survivors and first responders continue to escalate. Data from the World Trade Center Health Program shows that cancer cases certified as connected to the attacks have reached 57,044, a significant increase from 3,204 cases recorded in 2015.
Total individuals suffering from September 11-related illnesses have surpassed 97,000. These conditions include acute respiratory issues, digestive illnesses, mental health needs, and various cancers. At Northwell Health, 30% of the 5,000 patients in the program are diagnosed with more than one cancer.
In addition to health crises, new media projects are revisiting the event. A new documentary, ‘32 Frames: A 9/11 Mystery,’ investigates 32 unpublished photographs recovered from a camera in the World Trade Center rubble, attempting to identify the photographer who likely died during the collapse. Another documentary, ‘9/11: The Unseen Tapes,’ utilizes previously unreleased footage from the Reuters archive to provide new perspectives on the day's events.
