Orthodox Church commemorates Saint John the Theologian and various martyrs
The Orthodox Church observes several significant religious feast days in late September. On September 26, the Church commemorates the Dormition of Saint John the Theologian, one of the four Evangelists and a close disciple of Christ. Tradition holds that after his death in Ephesus, his tomb was found empty, leading to the celebration of his translation to eternal life.
On September 27, the liturgical calendar honors Saint Callistratus and 49 martyrs who died with him during the persecutions under Emperor Diocletian. The day also commemorates Saint Acylina, a young martyr from Zagklivari, Thessaloniki, who died in 1764 after refusing to renounce her Christian faith during Ottoman rule. Other saints honored include the Apostles Mark, Aristarchus, and Zeno, as well as Saint Epicharis.
In the United States, a hierarchical vespers service was held at the Cathedral in Tenafly, New Jersey, to honor Saint John the Theologian. In Greece, various local religious activities and services are held to mark these dates, including the appointment of a new Presbyter in Zakynthos.
