September Full Moon marks the transition to autumn

The September full moon, traditionally known as the ‘Corn Moon’, reached its peak on Saturday, September 26. This lunar event marks the transition from summer to autumn. The name ‘Corn Moon’ originates from North American Indigenous traditions, signifying the period when corn, pumpkin, beans, and rice were harvested. The bright moonlight historically assisted farmers in working through the night.

Looking ahead to future lunar events, the October 2026 full moon, referred to as the ‘Hunter’s Moon’, is expected to occur on Monday, October 26, 2026. This moon is traditionally associated with the period following the harvest when hunters could more easily locate animals in open fields. For optimal viewing of such phenomena, observers are encouraged to watch shortly after sunset to benefit from the horizon's optical illusion, which makes the moon appear larger and more orange-red.
