September identified as peak birthday month in the Netherlands

Data from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reveals that September is the month with the highest number of birthdays in the country. Specifically, September 30 stands out as the day with the most birthdays, with approximately 44,000 people celebrating on that date, compared to a daily average of roughly 41,000.

Several other dates in late September, including the 20th, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 27th, 28th, and 29th, also rank among the top ten busiest birthday days. Outside of September, only May 2 and May 3 appear in the top ten list.

Conversely, January 1 is recorded as the day with the fewest birthdays, with about 31,300 people. Other holidays such as Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Sinterklaas, and Liberation Day also see lower birth rates. Experts suggest this is because planned deliveries, including cesarean sections, are less frequently scheduled on public holidays.

Demographic trends also show a generational shift. People born between 1940 and 1980 tend to have birthdays in the spring, whereas those born after 1980 are more frequently born in the late summer and early autumn. The CBS notes that the introduction of the contraceptive pill in the 1960s may have contributed to these shifts by allowing for better pregnancy planning.
