Septembre en Or raises awareness for childhood cancer

Septembre en Or is an annual awareness month dedicated to childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancers. In France, approximately 2,500 new cases are diagnosed each year, with half occurring in children under five and nearly 700 in adolescents aged 15 to 18.

While pediatric cancers represent only 1% to 2% of all cancers in developed nations, they present unique medical challenges because their causes are rarely known, unlike adult cancers which are often linked to lifestyle factors.

Medical advancements have improved survival rates, with four out of five children now able to be cured on average, depending on the cancer type and diagnosis stage. These improvements are driven by enhanced chemotherapy, international treatment protocol harmonization, and ongoing medical research aimed at curing patients without long-term side effects. The CHU de Rouen serves as a regional treatment center, providing multidisciplinary care for patients aged 0 to 18.
