Septimiu Câmpeanu recounts life struggles after fleeing Romania

Former professional footballer Septimiu ‘Tim’ Câmpeanu has shared details regarding his difficult transition to life in Germany after fleeing Romania in 1988. Once a prominent striker for clubs including Universitatea Cluj and Steaua, Câmpeanu faced significant psychological distress due to the loss of social status and language barriers.

During his initial period in Germany, Câmpeanu struggled with depression and alcohol addiction, noting that he would consume small bottles of cognac following amateur football training. He lived on unemployment benefits while attempting to rebuild his life from scratch.

His circumstances improved in 1993 when the president of the Caritas humanitarian organization in Düsseldorf, who also led an amateur football club Câmpeanu played for, offered him a position. Câmpeanu transitioned into accounting, eventually becoming a manager in the field, which allowed him to stabilize his life.
