Osun State election: SERAP calls for probe into vote-buying and violence
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate alleged electoral offences during the 2026 Osun State governorship election.
SERAP is calling for a transparent probe into reported cases of vote-buying, financial inducement, illegal election financing, voter intimidation, and violence. The organization has urged authorities to preserve and examine banking records, mobile-money data, telecommunications data, CCTV footage, and polling-unit records. Additionally, SERAP has called for independent scrutiny from regional and international bodies, including the African Union (AU) and ECOWAS.
Following the election, INEC declared incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke the winner with 511,067 votes, defeating APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who received 444,815 votes. Preliminary reports from observers noted 323 electoral offences and irregularities across 726 polling units, including 103 cases of vote trading and 85 cases of ballot paper exposure.
In a related development, police reported that 295 suspects were arrested during the election period. While 293 individuals were released on bail after screening, two suspects remain in custody for further investigation and prosecution.
