SERAP urges UN intervention over 37 deaths in NSCDC custody
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called upon United Nations Special Rapporteurs to investigate the reported deaths of 37 individuals in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The deaths reportedly occurred following arrests made on 15 and 16 September 2026 during operations targeting suspected illegal mining in Niger State.
Following these reports, protests were held in Minna on 18 September. SERAP alleges that security forces used excessive and lethal force against these protesters, resulting in further deaths and serious injuries. The organization is demanding that Nigerian authorities establish the truth regarding the deaths in custody and the subsequent use of force against demonstrators, emphasizing the need for independent and transparent investigations.
