Serbia adopts parent‑caregiver law with 65,000 dinars monthly benefit

The Serbian government approved a new Parent‑Caregiver Law that grants a monthly cash allowance of 65,000 dinars to parents who provide full‑time care for severely ill children. In addition to the cash benefit, the state will cover pension and health‑insurance contributions for the caregivers. Existing child‑rights programmes, such as personal assistants and day‑center attendance, remain unchanged.

Advocacy groups, including the Association "Evo ruka" led by Ana Knežević, say the draft limits the benefit to non‑employed parents, forcing a choice between work and care. They call for the law to be expanded to include employed parents and retirees, and for a more flexible, differentiated support system. Estimates suggest the measure could initially cover 3,500‑5,000 families, with total state support reaching about 108,000 dinars per month when combined with existing child allowances.
