Aleksandar Vucic to resign presidency to run for prime minister

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has announced plans to resign his presidency to run for prime minister in upcoming early parliamentary elections, which are expected to take place in late October. The ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) has formally proposed Vucic for the role of prime minister, with Vucic suggesting a streamlined government consisting of a maximum of 12 ministers to increase efficiency.

Vucic stated he will officially dissolve Parliament and call for elections in the coming days. He intends to complete his current state duties and international visits before stepping down. The political transition occurs amid heightened tensions and ongoing protests, which Vucic has alleged are orchestrated by foreign powers. These demonstrations were largely fueled by public anger following a fatal canopy collapse at a train station in Novi Sad in November 2024.

In separate domestic news, Vucic announced that employees in social welfare and social work institutions will receive higher salary increases than other public sector workers. Meanwhile, the Union of Education Workers' Unions of Serbia reported that no funds have been secured for teacher salary increases until at least 2027.
