Serbia begins gas interconnection project with North Macedonia

Construction is set to begin on the gas interconnection pipeline between Serbia and North Macedonia. The first pipes for the Serbian section have been delivered, with work starting on a five-kilometer stretch near Vranjska Banja.

The total Serbian portion of the 145-kilometer pipeline will cost 153 million euros and is designed for an annual capacity of 1.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas. Serbian Energy Minister Dubravka Đedović Handanović stated that the goal is to complete the interconnection by the first quarter of 2028, though completion depends on finishing processes such as land expropriation.

North Macedonia aims to complete its side of the interconnection by mid-to-late 2028. The project is part of a larger regional effort to secure gas supply routes, including a Greek-North Macedonian interconnection expected to be operational in 2027. This vertical gas corridor is intended to help Greece supply Central Europe via the Balkans. Serbia currently holds gas reserves of 707 million cubic meters, which are expected to increase.
