Western Europe heat wave death toll exceeds 14,000

A severe heat wave that swept Western Europe at the end of June has been linked to at least 14,650 excess deaths, making it one of the deadliest climate‑related events on the continent. Official tallies show roughly 2,000 deaths in France, 1,740 in Belgium, 6,800 in Germany, 480 in the Netherlands, 810 in Spain and about 2,200 in the United Kingdom. The figures come from national health agencies and the EuroMOMO mortality‑monitoring network, which recorded 10,650 additional deaths across its 27 participating countries between 22 and 28 June.

Scientists attribute the spike to the extreme temperatures – with daily highs topping 40 °C in several regions – that overwhelmed vulnerable populations, especially the elderly and those with cardiovascular or respiratory conditions. EuroMOMO’s analysis concluded that the excess mortality could not be explained by other factors such as a COVID‑19 resurgence. “The level of excess mortality this time of year is highly unusual,” said Lasse Vestergård of Denmark’s Statens Serum Institut. The reports underscore growing concerns that climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of deadly heat waves across Europe.
